We are going to be chaging all of our servers at Decagon to Linux.  We have been running FreeBSD and have been very happy with it.  We have some new storage technology that isn’t supported in FreeBSD so we need to switch.  Anyway, we ordered a couple of books to aid in our knowledge and understanding of the Linux networking so we don’t get hosed.  One of these books is the Linux Networking Cookbook by Carla Schroder.  In flipping through the table of contents, there was a section that talked about secure remote administration.  It turns out that I had this completely awesome functionality enabled already.

What it does is allow me to create a tunnel using the ssh protocol and then the server will forward the X windows applications through that to the local computer.  This basically gives me a way to connect to my computer at work securely from anywhere that I have an internet connection.

This book has some other cool projects that we want to add to our list, like building a linux wireless access point and network monitoring.

I run Linux on all of my computers now.  I have to dual boot my computer at home so I can play my sim racing.  At work I have a virtual machine that allows me to run windows inside Linux so I can do the system administration on our ERP.  My laptop is Linux only.

Down with Microsoft!

Buy a mac. You know you want to.

:) I love this stuff. Do you get a kick out of the Mac comercials too?

  3. ian says:

I don’t like the Mac commercials actually. I’m not a fan of mud slinging. Plus, no matter how much I dislike Windows, a lot of the information in the commercials is incorrect.

  4. Jeff Williams says:

Which information in the commercials, specifically, is incorrect?

I’m an admitted fanboy and have been for years. But that’s because I really feel like their product offerings are superior in many ways. However, I don’t like the “cult of mac” and I am by no means one of their kool-aid drinkers.

All I know is that between Mac and Windows, every person that I know who has a mac, loves it… and nearly every person who has windows, hates macs but also pretty much hates windows too. They all seem quite conflicted. Neither computer will radically change your life, but if your goal is to actually *do* stuff on the computer, and if (unlike Ian) you really don’t give a flying crap about “working” on computers, then I don’t know why a Mac shouldn’t be your first choice. Especially with the new dual-boot option so you can run windows on the same machine.

Mac Commercials are a means to an end. If you are already biased against Apple, then you won’t like them. Those of use who have been using the Mac since it came out in 1984 have been looking for a funny, well-produced campaign like this for decades.

    And it’s working…

Don’t even get me started on my iPods and iPhone. Amazingly cool products that are super reliable and just work well.

    1. iphoto. I understand that it’s nice to have stuff built in but the commercial makes it sound like you can’t do photos. There are plenty of applications available to do your photos. Many of them come with your digital camera.

    2. Movies, Windows Movie Maker is very easy to use and I have gotten decent results.

    3. Entertainment, Computer gaming is PC Gaming. If you want to play the good games you have to run Windows. Windows is not all business applications.

    4. Compatibility. This is the one about the new digital camera from japan that apparently won’t work on windows. Bull Crap.

    5. Reliability. I have seen enough crashes on a Mac to know that they aren’t 100%. Granted since they are using the BSD kernel they are more stable than Windows but most fanboys seem to claim 100% uptime.

Just to name a couple. Now don’t get me wrong. I recognize that a Mac running Mac OS is much better than Windows, I just don’t think the commercials are completely truthful. I also understand that they are pushing their stuff so I can see why they want to make Windows look as bad as possible. Let’s face it they kinda do that on their own.
