Last night kami and I were able to go to dinner and a movie…alone. Yeah I know. It was nice to get out sans-children. We went to a Thai restaurant that was excellent. We had some veggie tempura and Phad Thai and some chicken that I can’t pronounce. We were both good a brought most of it home to eat later.
After dinner we made our way to the movie theater. We saw The Dark Knight. There has been a lot of media hype about this movie. I’ve heard some good reviews but I thought most of the popularity and talk was because of Heath Ledger’s death. This was the best Batman movie yet. Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker was so incredible.
Before last night my favorite Batman movie was the first one with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson as Joker. I loved Jack as the Joker and I didn’t think it could be done better. I stand corrected. The new Joker was so believably insane. I thought he was crazier than Hannibal Lector. He was soooo creepy.
It was an incredible movie. I loved it. I highly recommend it. It is definitely PG-13 though. It was pretty graphic. If you haven’t seen it you should.
This is going to be a little random. A few cool things happened this week.
1. We ditched our phone company on Wednesday.
A couple of months ago we switched from DSL internet to Cable internet. Verizon decided they didn’t want to disconnect it because that would disconnect our internet connection so they kept charging us. I’m not sure why they didn’t want me to disconnect the internet but they didn’t. So I was talking to a guy at work (Jeremy) and he was telling me that he just got VOIP (Voice Over IP). I have always been interested in trying that but I haven’t heard good things about Vonage and that seemed to be the only option. So Jeremy did all of the leg work in the research and found that phonepower.com had the best support, service and price. So now we have phone through them. We kept our phone number and have pretty much every feature imaginable and free unlimited long distance in the US and Canada. Not a bad deal if you ask me.
I don’t know why the large phone companies suck so bad. Maybe it is because they don’t have much competition within the regions so they don’t have to try very hard.
2. Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition.
I got my Father’s Day gift on Wendesday. The new core rule books came out a couple of weeks ago and now I have them. It is very cool. I think I like the changes they made and I’m excited to play more. I have done 3 sessions now but they were all pretty limited because we are learning the rules still. We are also going to be running a couple of them on our rpg site, Alternating-Reality.com.
3. Aluminum casting progress
We fired up the furnace again yesterday with some modifications. We used a plenum to distribute the air evenly through the coals. It worked fabulously. We also used a dish washer dryer fan instead of the vacuum. The dryer was very quiet and pumped plenty of air.
The furnace was much hotter this time with the new setup. We need to redesign our setup now to be able to handle the heat. The tin cans won’t work. We destroyed 2 of the 3 cans we were using. We also need to figure out how to get our aluminum shavings into the crucible. Right now we can’t get them in fast enough.
4. Wall-E
We saw Wall-E yesterday and it was awesome. They did such a great job telling the story. There was very little dialog and it was just visually stunning. It really is a must see in the theater.
Last week I finally upgraded my phone. I’ve been eyeballing several phones that have released since I got my first Android phone. The specs for this one (Evo 3D) released early this year and I was pretty sure this was the phone for me. 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4GB of internal [...]
Our little world is coming along quite nicely. We have several things from Lord of the Rings built. Alex is building Asgard with the Rainbow bridge. Jake and I have been building a Roman Coliseum. There are lots of other things going on. Here’s a render of Minas Tirith.
I recently discovered a new game. Minecraft! It is basically a sandbox style game. You start out with nothing in this world. You run around and interact with things to gain resources and then combine the resources using recipes to create tools and other items to use in your world. [...]
Recently my life has been completely full of Dungeons and Dragons role playing. I normally play once a week on Wednesdays. Lately it has been at least twice. Last night I ran a session for my nephew and his friends. It was their first time and it went really well. [...]
My 2 boys are huge fans of Brian Regan and have so many of his jokes memorized. We were pretty excited when we saw that he was coming. We were lucky enough to have such a great neighbor/friend that manages the bookings for the Colosseum on campus. Kami asked if [...]
I have setup a little web page to help us name our puppies. Vote on the ones you like. You can even submit your own names. Vote as many times as you like but please don’t abuse it. We won’t be using this strictly but we will take your opinions [...]
This week we got a fence installed around our back yard. Really we just finished off the parts that our neighbors fences didn’t enclose. We have been telling the kids that we couldn’t have a dog because we didn’t have a fence. Well, now that we have remedied that situation [...]
